ABSTRACT

The training process must be carefully monitored if a physical performance is to be optimised (Impellizzeri et al., 2005). Indeed, appropriate periodisation of the stress applied to athletes during training is important to obtain best results (Norris and Smith, 2002). Unfortunately, there have been few detailed reports of how training stress is periodised for team sports (Coutts et al., 2003). A possible reason for the limited information available on this topic is that there have been few practical methods that can be used to monitor the training stress experienced by participants in team sports.
