ABSTRACT

The throw-in is increasingly becoming recognized as an important skill in the game of soccer (Chang, 1979; Kollath and Schwirtz, 1988). During the World Cup in Mexico in 1986 the number of throw-ins near the opponent’s goal was similar to the number of free kicks in that area (Laux, 1986). Literature suggests that the long throw-in, when performed well, can reach a maximum horizontal range (MHR) of around 30 m. It has also been established that the long throw-in is largely a more accurate skill than the corner kick (Chang, 1979) and consequently can allow a player to pick out a team-mate for a goal scoring opportunity more easily when within range. The long-range throw-in can be performed from a stationary position or with a run-up.
