Interventions

Derived from an integrative assessment, an integrative case conceptualization specifies treatment goals and a treatment focus as well as a treatment strategy that specifies various interventions, which, when implemented, achieve the goals of treatment. When the treatment goals include the resolution of spiritual struggles, spiritual growth, or both, various psychological and spiritual interventions can be specified. This chapter describes various interventions that can be clinically useful in addressing spiritual struggles and fostering spiritual growth, and it illustrates how these psychotherapeutic interventions are utilized in spiritually oriented psychotherapy. Such interventions include cognitive restructuring, interpretation, and experiential focusing. The chapter also describes various spiritual interventions for achieving specific treatment goals and treatment targets. Examples of such spiritual interventions include prayer, meditation, mindfulness, and forgiveness. In addition to spiritual interventions are spiritual practices. Spiritual practices are focused activities that foster spiritual qualities and can result in a balanced and disciplined lifestyle. Examples of such practices include recognizing the sacred in all, living ethically, fasting, and giving service to others. Whether utilized as an adjunctive to the treatment process, spiritual practices can powerfully facilitate the change process and growth.
