Termination and Evaluation

Termination is often neglected in conventional psychotherapy training. In fact, there is a very limited research and professional literature in this area. There is even less literature on termination in spiritually oriented psychotherapy. This chapter describes the process of termination as well as termination issues that arise when spiritual issues have been a focus of therapy. It also describes the importance of evaluation of treatment outcomes, both overall evaluation of outcomes and session-by-session monitoring of therapeutic progress. The chapter begins with treatment evaluation and then considers the termination process in both conventional and spiritually oriented psychotherapy. Finally, the continuing case of Maria illustrates a number of key points regarding evaluation and termination in spiritually oriented psychotherapy.
