ABSTRACT

Art therapy is a unique profession in that it was founded by persons of varied backgrounds, experiences, and occupations. Professionals from the fields of social work, psychiatry, art education, and fine arts came together to form the American Art Therapy Association. Practitioners from diverse backgrounds shared the common goal of promoting art therapy as a unified profession (Junge, 1994). Social movements, political struggles, and the changing nature of art expression at the time created an atmosphere in which art therapy could develop and flourish.
