ABSTRACT

Complex thought processes are functions taking place via the Cognitive component of the Expressive Therapies Continuum. These processes include abstract concept formation, analytical and logical thought processes, reality-directed information processing, cognitive maps, and the use of verbal self-instructions in the performance of complex tasks (Kagin & Lusebrink, 1978b; Lusebrink, 1990, 1991b). Problem solving using art media is an important part of the Cognitive dimension and one way in which this component is used therapeutically. Other important activities representing functioning with the Cognitive component include the ability to classify media along various physical properties, recognition of interrelated objects, and the ability to sequence events in time (Kagin & Lusebrink, 1978b).
