ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine how clinicians providing professional services may promote community resources to support changes undertaken by service members and veterans as they return from war to live at home. To understand how clinicians can use community resources to address the needs of service members and veterans who are clients, we begin with the understanding that such interactions between clients and their environments are taking place as societal institutions are transforming. In earlier papers predicting evolutions in healthcare organizations for the next decade, one of us (Miller, DeLeon, Magaletta, Morgan, & Penk, 2006) predicted that health care will require clinicians to increase interventions augmenting self-care and self-reliance among clients while simultaneously maneuvering community resources to enhance treatment and rehabilitation provided by clinicians.
