ABSTRACT

Getting down to business and taking a history is a deŠning moment in the therapeutic relationship. I enter my client’s life and hear their experiences in a particular and detailed way. More than likely, most clients have never had the experience of examining the details of their lives and sexual habits up close and out loud with another person. It is well to tread mindfully among the tender places; emotional landmines wait just below the surface. For the novice, it may be an anxiety-provoking exercise to think of the right questions to ask (Morrison, 2008). In the beginning, it is best to listen to the client’s narrative and follow their lead.
