ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates developments in education in Singapore. Singapore is ostensibly a multi-party democracy but effectively functions as a one-party state, dominated since 1959 by the People’s Action Party (PAP). This political background is important in positioning the role of education in Singapore and how it has been infl uenced by neoliberalism. This chapter evaluates the impact of neoliberalism on the Singaporean education system using a range of critical insights. In particular we suggest neoliberalism, not only as an ideology, but also a set of techniques and practices refl ecting educational governance. The aim is to offer a critical appreciation of these developments in Singaporean education rather than to describe developments in detail.
