ABSTRACT

Unconfined aquatic placement is re-introduction of dredged sediments in the water system from which they originate, oceans, estuaries, rivers and lakes such that the returned sediments become again part of the natural sediment cycle. This involves placement of clean or mildly contaminated sediments on flat or gently sloping waterbeds in the form of mounds (see Figure 7.10). The placement sites can be dispersive or non-dispersive (retentive) depending on whether the sediment is transported out of the site by currents and/or wave action or remains within the designated boundaries.
