ABSTRACT

A review of the literature represented in PubMed (https://www.ncbi .nlm.nih.gov) indicated over 3,500 articles containing ‘Cryptosporidium’ or ‘Cryptosporidiosis’ in the title. Prior to the mid 1980s Cryptosporidium was poorly represented in the primary scientific and medical literature (Figure 1). This contrasts what is seen for giardiasis, a common protozoan diarrhea, which has been more extensively studied for many years (Figure 1). About one third of the publications on Cryptosporidium were generated within the last 6 years. Word frequency counts of titles from Cryptosporidium articles indicated (as one might expect) content associated with disease, symptoms of the disease, or host species. Assuming that the words present in the title are a reflection of the textual content of the manuscript, ‘water’ and ‘detection’ as well as ‘Giardia’, ‘AIDS’ and ‘HIV’ are also among the major areas of emphasis.
