ABSTRACT
With the onset of the Second World War, the prospective defeat of the
British offered the possibility of throwing-off the colonial yoke. Therefore, Aung San and a number of other urban-based (predominantly Burman)
political activists slipped out of the country, with the aim of forming alli-
ances with regional powers.
