ABSTRACT

The process of finding research sites began in the fall 1996, and selection was based on several criteria. First, because NSF requested that participating districts already be involved in systemic initiatives for reforming mathematics education, we began by contacting districts involved in Urban Systemic Initiatives (USI) or State Systemic Initiatives (SSI), university faculty who participated in mathematics education reform efforts across the United States, and school districts that had participated in the pilot-and field-test phases of the development of MiC. Four systemic initiatives, five university faculty, and eight pilot-and field-test sites were contacted, and negotiations were actively pursued with nine school districts.
