Specialized teacher education has an intrinsic effect on the development of special education in China. In response to a society undergoing transformation, special education in China is changing quickly, with special education schools as the backbone of the system and special education classes and suiban jiudu ( 隨班就讀

) or Learning in Regular Classrooms (LRC) as the mainstream practice. Such a pattern poses new challenges to teacher education. These challenges include the need for a special education curriculum, the development of effective teaching models, the demand for multidisciplinary and allied professionals, and the provision of a barrier-free environment and assistive technologies.
