ABSTRACT

Madeleine Akrich (akrich@csi.ensmp.fr) is maître de recherche at the Centre de Sociologie de l’Innovation, Ecole des Mines de Paris. Her work is mainly devoted to the sociology of technology, with a special interest in the users of technology. Her recent research is in the area of obstetrics-looking at the way technology influences the experiences of women and the relationships and practices of professionals-and in the area of new information technologies in biomedicine-examining their influence on the constitution of new professional and patient collectives. The work reported on here was supported by MIRE (Mission Interministérielle de Recherche et d’Expérimentation) and INSERM (Institut National Supérieur d’Expérimentation et de Recherche Médicale).
