Abbe, Cleveland (1838-1916) Astronomer and meteorologist. Born in New York City, Abbe was educated at The New York Free Academy (now The City College of New York), graduating in 1857, and the University of Michigan, where he studied astronomy with F.F.E. Brünnow from 1859 to 1860. He then worked for the United States Coast Survey until 1864. From January 1865 until November 1866, he was a research assistant to Otto Struve at Pulkova Observatory in Russia. In February 1868, he became director of the Cincinnati Observatory. He joined the United States Army Signal Corps storm-warning service, the predecessor of the Weather Bureau, in 1870, remaining with the bureau until his death.
