ABSTRACT

A primary theme in the following chapters is that all of the narrators’ identities are multiple, simultaneous, converge with one another, and exert a powerful influence on their development. Identity, in this context, refers to both visible and invisible domains of the self that influence self-construction. They include, but are not limited to, ethnicity, skin color, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, and physical and intellectual ability. In different contexts, various facets of one’s identity may dominate in self-definition.
