Confronting Welfare Racism

Our final chapter is devoted exclusively to what can be done to confront welfare racism. We begin by stressing the urgency of moving beyond the popular societal predisposition to deny the existence and significance of white racism and its catastrophic effect on the U.S. response to poverty. We conclude by briefly sharing our vision of the type of commitment needed to seriously embark on that journey and what U.S. poverty policy might look like if, indeed, it were able to move beyond racism.
