ABSTRACT

An important aspect of the treatment of pediatric atopic dermatitis (AD) is to develop a trusting relationship with the patient’s parents, who must be well informed of the aim of the treatment. Indeed, it is particularly important to explain that the aim of the treatment is to control pruritus and eczematous lesions, but that cure is not possible. The chronic course of the disease is very worrying for the family, and the psychological impact of the disease has to be well considered. It is important to explain that the disease is not caused by stress, but that the child may be stressed or manipulative because of the disease itself. The education of the child and the family very often requires a lot of time because of preconceived ideas about AD, but this step of discussion and explanation is required for the good management and efficacy of home treatment.
