ABSTRACT

A. Background The concept of the modern public museum began with the opening of the British Museum, London, in 1759, which displayed natural history specimens, manuscripts, art pieces, and collections of ethnographic, numismatic, and classical artifacts [1]. Since then, museums worldwide have unveiled holdings as diverse as contemporary toy collections, local historical artifacts, NASA spacesuits and airships, modern video art, outdoor sculpture, and architectural sites. The physical maintenance of these collections has been entrusted to conservators, whose tasks include examination, treatment, storage, and display of the artifacts for optimal preservation.
