ABSTRACT

I. ABSTRACT Most breast cancers have a sensitivity to estrogen, which contributes to their progression. Therefore it has been postulated that antiestrogens could be used to chemoprevent breast cancer. Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) are antiestrogens with some beneficial estrogenic effects, causing a lowering of cholesterol and preservation of bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. This chapter covers the data from trials using SERMs, especially tamoxifen, for the chemoprevention of breast cancer in healthy women.
