ABSTRACT

A continuum is a compact connected metric space. A continuum C is arc-like if for each e > 0 there is a continuous function from C onto the interval / = [0,1], g: C —*• /, such that for each t e /, diam (g"1^)) < e. A continuum C is decomposable if it can be expressed as the union of two of its proper subcontinua, and C is hereditarily decomposable if each non-degenerate subcontinuum of C is decomposable.
