ABSTRACT
In the context of drug development, the term surrogate has come to mean an indirect measure that predicts the efficacy or safety of drugs in a clinical population. Surrogates may be developed for use in patients (e.g., the use of an imaging measure in place of subjective ratings in a study of clinical pain), but the focus of this chapter is on surrogates of efficacy based on pain models in healthy subjects.
