Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in infancy frequently causes bronchiolitis, an illness characterized by airway obstruction and wheezing. Whether this illness is related to the eventual development of childhood asthma, another illness with prominent airway obstruction and wheezing, has been the subject of debate for decades.
