No such thing as a social advantage for the left?

It is now a commonplace that Latin America has turned to the left as parties (or candidates) with this orientation have won elections in Chile, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, and Brazil. These developments have opened a door to a debate about the character of these administrations, both in terms of their performance and, in some cases, of their democratic credentials.
