ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1, some of the reasons for ‘working together’ have been discussed including some of the theories and concepts underpinning the purposes of joint or integrated service provision. Chapter 2 explores the development of both strategies and services to combat the fragmentation of children’s service planning and delivery that has arisen through separate service development and lack of central planning historically. In this chapter, the discussion will focus on issues and problems facing integrated services and ‘joined-up’ services, and will explore the reasons why working together is a challenge. The chapter will focus mainly on examples at strategic and service delivery levels, as the challenges for individuals and managers working in multi-disciplinary teams will be explored in Chapter 4.
