ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns children and young people that in the United States of America are defined as having ‘mild mental retardation’ although other terms such as ‘mild cognitive impairment’ and ‘mild intellectual disability’ are used interchangeably. In England the broadly equivalent term is ‘moderate learning difficulties’. This chapter mainly uses the term ‘mild cognitive impairment’. Other terms such as ‘mild mental retardation’ are employed where they are specifically used in research and assessment.
