ABSTRACT
This chapter explains definitions of hearing impairment and deafness; prevalence; causal factors; identification and assessment; implications of hearing impairment and issues relating to the education of deaf children. In examining provision, the chapter mainly focuses on pedagogy including general approaches; communication (oral/aural, sign bilingual and total communication approaches); literacy (in the sign bilingual and oral/aural approaches) and mathematics.
