ABSTRACT

The chapter concerns children and young people that in the United States of America are defined as having ‘profound mental retardation’, and in England, in recognition of the frequent accompanying disabilities and disorders, as having ‘profound and multiple learning difficulties’. Equivalent terms to ‘mental retardation’ include ‘mental handicap’ (Hong Kong and other parts of Asia), ‘intellectual disability’ (Australia and New Zealand) and ‘cognitive impairment’ (an alternative usage in the United States of America).
