ABSTRACT

Formed from autos, Greek for self, and gen for produced, autogenic is often used synonymously with autogenous to describe actions that are selfinitiated. In sports, autogenic RELAXATION techniques are practiced as part of training regimes. They were first introduced in the 1950s by Johannes Schultz, who, when working with patients under HYPNOSIS, discovered that his subjects reported a heaviness of limbs and a sensation of warmth. His version of autogenic training was designed to reproduce the two states. Typically, autogenic RELAXATION involves self-initiated procedures

in which the individual experiences progressive relaxation through sensations of weight and heat. IMAGERY is also used, as is SELF-TALK.
