ABSTRACT

Despite the availability of a large number of published reports, reviews and research reports providing guidance to successful project execution, many high-profile and publicly funded projects still attract adverse publicity through failing to meet predetermined objectives and intended outcomes. As a result, the CRC for Construction Innovation (CRCCI) sought to explore and better understand the myriad reasons why construction projects still fail to achieve their intended outcomes. This chapter reports on the development of a Project Diagnostics Toolkit protocol which includes metrics to:

• indicate the areas where projects are going wrong; • diagnose why projects may be failing; • suggest means of returning projects to ‘better health’ (with a direct

link to better business outcomes).
