ABSTRACT

The four stages outlined in Chapter 4 set out a step-by-step method; the resulting graphs should be understood as work in progress rather than an end in themselves. This chapter therefore explores how to present analytical work, clarifying and refining the notation already introduced. Most published Schenkerian analyses explore music on a variety of levels of detail; what follows concerns the practicalities of presenting different types of graph. If these discussions stray beyond matters strictly concerned with presentation, that is because notational convention in Schenkerian analysis is inextricably linked with the view of musical structure that it portrays.
