ABSTRACT

Much has been said and written about nuclear weapon free zones (NWFZs) throughout the world, their particularities, their structures, advantages and disadvantages, and above all, their function as a mechanism for nonproliferation of nuclear weapons. Latin America, the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Antarctica are cited as regions where NWFZs have been successfully esta blished. I will not deal with the technical issues of NWFZs already established. Rather, I will present two basic propositions on the virtues and utilities of NWFZs in general, and two propositions, I hope new and perhaps controversial, specific to NWFZ or weapon of mass destruction-free zone (WMDFZ) in the Middle East.
