ABSTRACT
How can technology help to achieve the primary goal of professional development in literacy, that of enhancing the proficiency of educators in order to optimize student learning? This question is the chief focus of the present chapter, but answering it requires that we first establish a conceptual foundation of professional development. We examine how technology is building on that foundation in a variety of current initiatives. Finally, we attempt to distill common principles from these initiatives that might guide future endeavors.
