ABSTRACT

Hello Dolly was part of an interdisciplinary unit merging social studies and biology around the common theme of cloning and genetics that was derived from questions about the value of cloning to society. This chapter, using the Dolly unit as one model, proposes that citizenship education is at the core of social studies and of education more generally, and that the creation of interdisciplinary curriculum with authentic assessment is best suited to support the goals of citizenship education. First, I provide some contextual background through an examination of current issues in social studies curriculum and assessment. What follows is an exploration of how interdisciplinary curriculum, specifically one that utilizes authentic assessment, can be employed to promote citizenship education.
