ABSTRACT
The first piece of electronic music for magnetic tape composed in America was most likely a little work called Heavenly Menagerie by Louis (1920-89) and Bebe Barron (b. 1927). Bebe dated the work to 1950, about the time that she and her husband acquired their first tape recording equipment.1
