ABSTRACT

Teamwork is important. The measure of a team is best judged by how much commitment and effort members are putting in or are prepared to put in, and by the way they work with and communicate with one another. It is true that a team will not be able to achieve and survive if members do not work together or are not supportive of one another. It is also true that when people are inconsistent in their commitment or some people do considerably more than others, con¯ict and resentment can break the spirit of a team and therefore the team. We all know that this is true. We accept it without question because it makes sense. The principle of division of responsibility is at the heart of and a guiding concept for a successful team. People in the team look at what expertise each member has, negotiate with one another to decide on what each can or will do, and then carry out their respective responsibilities in a consistent and committed manner in order to achieve the team goals. The spirit of a team approach can be observed in marriages, families, sports teams, organisations or governments.
