ABSTRACT

These examples illustrate features of individuals who procrastinate for different reasons. Procrastinators often say: `I know I should be doing it, but I'll get around to it later; I hope things will work out; I wish things were better; or maybe it'll be okay.' By postponing or staying in the `comfort zone', not only will they be unable to live their lives in a ful®lling and meaningful way and to achieve their potential, but also their emotional turmoil (e.g. anxiety, frustration, shame, anger and worry) can have the unwanted effect of self-stigmatisation (e.g. `I am a loser') which, in turn, can affect their self-esteem and self-con®dence. Low self-esteem is a symptom and a cause of mental health problems such as anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorders and schizophrenia.
