ABSTRACT

Life is about ups and downs and we all know that. The crucial point is about how the `down' is being dealt with, not just knowing. The measure of a person is best judged by how they cope with adversity and whether they bene®t from it. Whether or not they can pick themselves up and how quickly are closely related to their mental attitude. Confucius said: `Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.' It is true that no human being can be on top all the time and it is also true that we can't have sunny days every day. We all know that this is the truth. We accept it without question, because it makes sense. We tell ourselves, our friends, our families and our children about setbacks being a fact of life. After all, the `fall' will help toughen up our personality, develop adult thinking, mature us psychologically and emotionally, and enable us to be more creative and imaginative in our work. In other words, the list of bene®ts from the `fall' can go on and on, but only if we have the right mental attitude.
