ABSTRACT

Of the three theories considered in Chapter 3, Theory Theory seems to fit the developmental data best. Simulation Theory is so intuitively plausible, however, that it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that we simulate others sometimes. This is particularly so for emotion. When we imagine ourselves in an emotive situation, we really feel a little of the emotion in question. Simulation also seems potentially useful for insight into very complex situations for which working through the machinations of a theory might be too difficult. Jane Austen was probably a superb simulator. I have nothing against Modularity Theory in principle, although as yet there is little specific evidence for it.
