ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how time is fundamental to debates over work in sociology. It discusses how time was rooted firmly in the thoughts on work of classical theorists, and shows that time remains one of the central concepts within the study of work and employment today. The chapter highlights a

range of sociological concerns around work time including time, control and resistance in work; and social inequalities in work time. By drawing on a range of theoretical and methodological approaches, the chapter demonstrates how sociology has provided a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the importance of time for the study of work and workers’ lives.
