In the Fall of 1991, the televised Senate hearings on the confirmation of Clarence Thomas as Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court yielded an unexpected and fascinating benefit for the student of literature and culture: the voice of Shakespeare ventriloquized, speaking through our nation’s lawmakers and those called to testify before them.
