ABSTRACT

As stated in the introduction, this book is not simply on how to do mathematics. I’ve given strategies and examples for supporting the teaching and learning of mathematics at various stages, and underlined these with an explanation of the principles for success and the creation of a learning environment within which mathematical understanding can flourish. The main principles are that children need to learn key mathematical facts for speed and efficiency, make connections between mathematical concepts and develop specific language to access and describe mathematics. They also need to know that mathematics is a thinking activity.
