ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on teaching and learning for children in Years 1 and 2, taking the objectives from the NNS as the starting point for suggestions and practical activities.

The demands for Year 1 are heavy, yet time must be found to reinforce insecure learning from Reception. Children who have not grasped the language and concepts from the Foundation Stage will be disadvantaged unless they have opportunities to revisit what has been taught. From Year 1, children start to follow the National Curriculum, but they continue to experiment with number, shape, position, pattern and problem-solving.
