A veteran reformer who advised the National Defense Association1 wrote to E. B. Foote Sr. in 1886: “Try to remember that we are all now making history and giving example to the world of what we believe can ultimately [be] made successful in the cooperative work of reform” (Schroeder, Box 6, Folder 1).
