ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the dynamics and policy context of the international migration and recruitment of nurses from the Philippines to the United Kingdom (UK). The Philippines has a long history of ‘exporting’ nurses and other health professionals to other countries and regions, such as the United States (US) and the Gulf; more recently it has become a major source for other English speaking countries (e.g., the UK and Ireland), and it is currently developing a bilateral agreement with Japan for recruitment of nurses. The Philippines is thus one of the most important national players in the global healthcare scene.
