ABSTRACT

One of the key ideas underpinning the teaching of writing is the reading-writing connection: through reading and examining a range of text types we ‘write like a reader’. As a result, the literacy units developed by the Primary National Strategy are based on text types, following a powerful teaching sequence through which shared reading leads to shared writing and into independent writing by the children. However, while some of the units in this book follow this pattern, it is not the only way in which to work, and one of the aims of this book is to provide examples of variations. So, in Chapter 14 poetry begins with a set of illustrations and in Chapter 13 a language based unit explores the differences between speech and writing. Here we focus on a key literacy process, the writing process, working in ways which enable children to explore it and understand how writing can move through a series of stages from initial thinking to a final, polished piece.
