ABSTRACT

Man must reassume his place between dream and events. Artaud, The Theatre and its Double

A relationship between dramatherapy and ritual has been suggested by a number of theoreticians. Parallels have also frequently been drawn between theatre practice and religious or social ritual. In the twentieth century this connection ranged from experimental Holy Theatre to the work of Schechner and Boas in the anthropology of performance. The meanings given to the word ‘ritual’ in these comparisons and relations are extremely varied. In this chapter I intend to identify a number of these areas of meaning and to look at their relevance to dramatherapy.
