Frederick Douglass, born in 1818 to a slave and her master, escaped from aSouthern prison-house of bondage to become one of the great orators and essayists for racial equality of the 19th century. His early life is testimony to the potential of humankind to triumph over adversity. His adult life is testimony to the power of public persuasion.
