ABSTRACT

To what extent does leadership involve actually pitching in and doing the job? Should head teachers be teachers, for example? Or is that a waste of valuable management time? More to the point, perhaps, when they do teach, are they doing it for the good of the institution, or to give the children a taste of real quality, or are they just escaping from the telephone?

Pitching in Most head teachers choose to teach some classes, even when the staffing position is such that they don’t actually need to. Why is this? Are they saying ‘This is how it’s done’? Are they nervous about their credibility? Is it something they half-guiltily enjoy as an escape from the paperwork?
